Shrenik was the most glorious and very famous king of the Magadha Empire. In Buddhist literature he is known as Bimbisara. A lot has been written about him in Buddhist and Jain literature. It is said that he was a follower of Jainism, but he also had faith in Buddhism. Raja Shrenik was a contemporary of Mahatma Buddha and Swami Mahavir.Their capital was Rajgriha i.e. Rajgir. His wife's name was Chelna, who was the daughter of King Chetak of Vaishali kingdom. It is said that the famous sons of Queen Chelna included Abhaykumar and Kunik i.e. Ajatashutra.
Once upon a time. King Shrenik's mind was disturbed. He was neither able to sleep properly at night nor did he find food interesting. The mind was like an alien mind. He was not interested in any work. Many types of apprehensions surrounded him. He could not understand why this was happening. Coincidentally, Mahatma Buddha had visited Rajgriha in those days.
King Shrenik, restless at heart, thought of meeting the Tathagat and asking for a solution to the problem. He reached the ashram. At that time the sermon of Mahatma Buddha was going on. All the people present there were very happy listening to Buddha's sermon.
King Shrenik also went and sat in a corner without creating any disturbance. Buddha sensed his mood. During the sermon itself he said that desires distract a person. If a man gets freedom from desires, be he a king or a pauper, everyone can live a happy life. Man loses his desires. On hearing this, King Shrenik got the solution to his problems. He returned to the palace happy.
