After attaining enlightenment, Buddha gave his first sermon from Sarnath. It is said that only five people were present at that time. Later the number of Buddha's disciples reached lakhs. To accommodate these disciples, Mahatma Buddha and his wealthy supporters had established Sanghas, monasteries and viharas at many places. The name of the organization of disciples of Mahatma Buddha was 'Buddhist Sangha' or 'Bhikshu Sangha'. After his enlightenment, Buddha expanded and built Buddhist orders at various places in North India such as Magadha, Sarnath, Vaishali, Shravasti, Rajagriha, etc. At one place, when the need to build a Buddhist monastery was felt, Tathagata decided to collect money from the people for it.
People donated generously for the construction of the Buddhist monastery. Nagar Seth also gave a lot of gold coins. An elderly woman came among these people. He lived his entire life in extreme poverty. Somehow he managed to earn his living and saved one rupee. That elderly woman brought one rupee and handed it over with great devotion for the construction of the Vihar.
When everything was settled, Mahatma Buddha called his disciple and asked who had donated how much. That disciple said, Lord! Nagar Seth had donated several hundred gold coins, but this was not even one percent of his total wealth. Then Buddha asked who had given 100% donation. The disciple told that a poor elderly mother had donated one rupee. That was his life's savings. When the monastery was completed, the inscription on its door had the old woman's name inscribed at the top.
